War schon das Erreichen des Viertelfinales eine schöne Überraschung für die mauritischen Fußballfans, nach dem sensationellen Erfolg im Viertelfinale gab es kein Halten mehr und die Spieler und Zuschauer lagen sich im Stade Anjalay in Pamplemousses in den Armen! Zum zweiten Mal in der Geschichte der Mauritius Football Association konnte sich dadurch die Nationalmannschaft für die Weltmeisterschaft qualifizieren. Präsident der Republik Mauritius, Prithvirajsing Roopun, kündigte an, dass Gasttipper Joernie lebenslang freien Eintritt in den Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden haben werde. Nach dem Ghana-Coup war dann zwar die Luft raus bei Mauritius, aber mit Platz 4 erreichte man die beste Platzierung im Afrika Cup seit der Saison 51 (damals auch Platz 4). Hinzu kam, dass Jonathan Adjei zusammen mit dem Angolaner Belmiro Kapela Torschützenkönig des Turniers wurde (4 Tore in 6 Spielen).

Drei Punkte reichten nicht für Mauritius, um die Gruppenphase zu überstehen, obwohl Tansania und Ägypten ebenfalls nur drei Punkte aufwiesen. Tansania hatte jedoch ein etwas besseres Torverhältnis als Mauritius und schnappte sich so den wertvollen zweiten Platz hinter dem dreifach siegreichen Mali.
