Der Fußballclub Hansa Rostock e. V., kurz F.C. Hansa Rostock und allgemein bekannt als Hansa Rostock, ist ein deutscher Fußballverein aus Rostock. Mit 17.407 Mitgliedern ist er einer der mitgliederstärksten Sportvereine Deutschlands. Gegründet wurde der F.C. Hansa als Fußballclub am 28. Dezember 1965 mit der Ausgliederung der Fußballabteilung aus dem am 11. November 1954 gegründeten SC Empor Rostock. Im BMO-Universum firmiert der Klub seit der Saison 69 als Hansa Rostock.
Rostock ist eine norddeutsche kreisfreie Groß-, Hanse- und Universitätsstadt an der Ostsee. Sie liegt im Landesteil Mecklenburg des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Mit 209.061 Einwohnern ist sie die bevölkerungsreichste Stadt Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns und eins der vier Oberzentren im Land. Die Stadt Rostock führt die Bezeichnung Hanse- und Universitätsstadt.
Das Stadtgebiet erstreckt sich rund 16 Kilometer auf beiden Seiten der Warnow bis zu deren Mündung in die Ostsee im Stadtteil Warnemünde. Die Innenstadt liegt auf dem linken Ufer des Flusses. Geprägt wird Rostock durch seine Lage am Meer, seinen Hafen sowie die Universität Rostock, die 1419 gegründet wurde. Der für den Fährverkehr und Güterumschlag bedeutende Rostocker Hafen sowie der größte deutsche Kreuzfahrthafen in Warnemünde liegen im Stadtgebiet. Die 1991 begründete Hanse Sail hat sich zu einer der großen maritimen Veranstaltungen im Ostseeraum entwickelt.
Rostock wurde am 24. Juni 1218 das Lübische Stadtrecht bestätigt. Seit 1283 Mitglied der Hanse, blühte die Stadt in den folgenden Jahrhunderten durch den Freihandel auf. Aus jener Zeit sind eine Reihe von Bauten der Backsteingotik erhalten. Viele weitere Baudenkmale in Rostock zeugen von der geschichtlichen Entwicklung der Stadt. Durch den Niedergang der Hanse, den Dreißigjährigen Krieg und den Stadtbrand von 1677 wurde Rostock zurückgeworfen und die Einwohnerzahl verringerte sich auf ein Drittel, wovon sich die Stadt erst mit der Industrialisierung im 19. Jahrhundert vollständig erholen konnte.
Die Stadt gehörte bis 1918 zum Großherzogtum und dann zum Freistaat Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Rostock war als größte Stadt Mecklenburgs stets das wirtschaftliche Zentrum des Landes. Neben der Haupt- und Residenzstadt Schwerin war Rostock mit seiner Universität auch Zentrum von Kultur und Wissenschaft in Mecklenburg.
Mit der Gründung der Flugzeugwerke Arado 1921 und Heinkel 1922 wurde Rostock ein bedeutender Technologiestandort, was die Stadt in den 1940er Jahren zu einem Ziel des Luftkriegs im Zweiten Weltkrieg machte. In der DDR-Zeit war Rostock von 1952 bis 1990 Bezirksstadt und wurde systematisch durch neue Stadtgebiete erweitert, bis es auf über 250.000 Einwohner anwuchs. Jahrhundertelang dominierte die maritime Wirtschaft. Nach 1990 hat sich die Rostocker Wirtschaft erheblich verändert. Die Bedeutung der Schiffbauindustrie ging stark zurück. Viele neue Arbeitsplätze entstanden im Tourismus und im Dienstleistungssektor, größter Arbeitgeber der Stadt ist die Universität mit der Universitätsmedizin.
