Der AFC Sunderland (offiziell: Sunderland Association Football Club) – auch bekannt als The Black Cats – ist ein 1879 gegründeter englischer Fußballverein aus der Industriestadt Sunderland im Nordosten von England. Den AFC Sunderland und Newcastle United verbindet eine traditionsreiche Rivalität. Spiele beider Mannschaften werden „Tyne and Wear Derby“ genannt. Seit 1997 spielt Sunderland im 49.000 Zuschauer fassenden Stadium of Light. Zuvor war der Verein im Roker Park beheimatet.
Sunderland ist eine Hafenstadt im Metropolitan County Tyne and Wear in Nordost-England. Bis 1974 war Sunderland ein County Borough der traditionellen Grafschaft County Durham. Sunderland liegt an der Mündung des Flusses Wear in die Nordsee und hat etwa 174.000 Einwohner. Seit 1974 ist die Stadt der namensgebende Kernort des größeren Metropolitan Borough City of Sunderland. Sunderland war immer ein Zentrum des Schiffbaus und lange Zeit auch des Kohleabbaus. Die letzte Werft schloss allerdings 1988, das letzte Kohlebergwerk 1994. Auf dem Gelände des Bergwerks befindet sich heute das Stadium of Light, in dem der Fußballverein AFC Sunderland spielt. Die Brauerei Vaux, 1837 im Zentrum errichtet, war 170 Jahre lang einer der größten Arbeitgeber, wurde jedoch 2000 geschlossen. Mit dem Niedergang traditioneller Industrien haben sich in Sunderland moderne Industriezweige (Elektronik, Chemie, Papier) niedergelassen. Einige davon befinden sich, ebenso wie die zu Nissan gehörige Automobilfabrik, im nahegelegenen Washington. 1990 wurden die Ufer des Wear regeneriert; Wohnhäuser sowie Einkaufs- und Geschäftszentren wurden auf dem Gelände früherer Werften errichtet.
Da Sunderland während des Zweiten Weltkriegs durch Bombardierungen schwer getroffen wurde, besteht das Stadtzentrum überwiegend aus zweckmäßigen Nachkriegsbauten. Gleichwohl sind viele alte Gebäude erhalten; zu ihnen gehören die Kirche Holy Trinity, 1719 erbaut, und die Kirche St. Peter, die aus dem früheren Kloster entstand und in einigen Teilen aus dem Jahr 674 stammt.
